So, instead of a single-stretch of flashback showing us how things had soured between Rocky and Manimaran, we get a fractured narrative with the past and present overlapping one another. Rather than spoonfeeding, the writing actually drip-feeds information about the past. Tamil cinema's perennial favourites, the amma sentiment and thangachi sentiment, get the European arthouse action film treatment in Rocky, a gloriously violent, superbly shot film. And it comes in the form of Manimaran (Bharathirajaa), the gangster for whom he worked in his previous life, and whose son he murdered (in front of the old man's eyes). But then, his past involved a life of violence and has been lying in wait to catch up with him. Like the eagle, he has endured 17 years of imprisonment and is now hoping to find out about his missing sister Amudha (Raveena Ravi) and get his life back. And when we see Rocky (Vasanth Ravi) coming out of prison, we instantly make the connection. How it can prolong its life if it can bear gruesome pain. Rocky begins with a girl narrating a story about the Eagle.
